The lemon tetra is a vibrant South American characid originating from the lower Amazon basin in Brazil, particularly the region around Belém. Its translucent body carries a distinctive lemon-yellow hue, and its bright yellow eyes and black-edged yellow anal fin make it one of the most recognisable tetras in the hobby. Reaching only 3.5–4 cm, the lemon tetra is a small, peaceful species that does best in a well-maintained community aquarium with plenty of planted cover.
In nature, lemon tetras likely inhabit minor tributaries, small rivers, and flooded forests rather than main river channels. The aquarium should replicate these conditions with a sandy substrate, driftwood roots and branches, and the addition of dried leaf litter. The decomposing leaves promote microbe colonies which provide an additional food source and release beneficial humic substances. An aquarium with base dimensions of at least 80 cm x 30 cm (~72 litres) should be the minimum considered. They tolerate a wide temperature range of 20–28 °C and prefer soft, acidic water (pH 5.0–7.5).
Lemon tetras are very peaceful and make ideal residents of the well-planned community aquarium. They should be kept in groups of at least six to eight to feel secure. Their diet in the wild is omnivorous, comprising small invertebrates, crustaceans, filamentous algae, and fallen fruit. In captivity they accept a varied menu of quality dried foods alongside live and frozen options such as bloodworm, Daphnia, and Moina. Regular feeding of live foods brings out their best colouration and keeps them in optimal breeding condition.
