The scissortail rasbora reaches about 15 cm standard length and is a very active, surface-dwelling cyprinid from the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins across Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and southeast Asia. It gets its name from the distinctive scissoring motion of the tail fin when the fish is at rest. A school of 6 or more needs a tank at least 120 by 45 cm (about 255 L) with plenty of open swimming surface and a tight-fitting lid — they are accomplished jumpers. Temperature of 22–25 °C and pH 5.0– 8.0 suit them well; they are adaptable across a range of water chemistries. Diet is insectivorous: quality flakes, floating pellets, and regular live or frozen foods like daphnia and mosquito larvae. They are peaceful and mix well with other robust community fish of similar size. Intolerant of poor water quality; efficient filtration and regular changes are a must.
