The chili rasbora reaches about 2 cm standard length and is one of the smallest cyprinids in the hobby. It is endemic to blackwater peat swamps of southwestern Borneo, where the water is very soft and acidic. The aquarium should measure at least 45 by 30 cm (about 41 L) with a school of 8–10 fish, dim lighting, and plenty of floating plants to diffuse the light. Temperature can range widely from 20 to 28 °C but pH should be kept between 4.0 and 7.0, ideally on the acidic side. In hard, alkaline water they lose colour and condition. They are micropredators that feed on tiny insects, worms, and crustaceans in nature; offer Artemia, daphnia, and fine-grade dried foods. Males are intensely coloured when dominant; the species is completely peaceful and safe with dwarf shrimp. Avoid adding them to a biologically immature tank as they are sensitive to water chemistry swings.
