The Denison barb or red-line torpedo barb (Sahyadria denisonii) is a stunning cyprinid endemic to the states of Kerala and Karnataka in the Western Ghats of southern India. Its modern distribution is highly fragmented, with small populations remaining in roughly a dozen river systems. A brilliant scarlet stripe runs from the snout through the eye to the midbody, underscored by a wide black lateral stripe and a yellow band — a colour pattern that has made it one of the most sought-after aquarium fish of the last two decades. It reaches a standard length of 9 to 11 cm (up to 15 cm total length). This is an active, schooling species that requires ample horizontal swimming space, with a minimum tank size of 120 cm x 45 cm (approximately 240 litres). It naturally inhabits pristine, highly oxygenated headwaters and rocky pools with dense riparian vegetation, and is intolerant of organic pollutants. Excellent filtration, moderate water movement, and weekly water changes of 30 to 50% are necessary for long-term health. The Denison barb is generally peaceful and schools tightly; groups of at least 6 to 10 are recommended. Its diet should include small live and frozen foods alongside quality dried products, with sinking formulations preferred. It is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List.
