Description

Seachem Stability is bottled bacteria for starting a biofilter, in fresh or salt water. Seachem describes it as a blend of aerobic, anaerobic and facultative bacteria that break down waste organics, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate, and states the strains are non-sulfur-fixing, so they will not produce toxic hydrogen sulfide. Seachem also states it is harmless to all aquatic organisms and to plants, with no danger from overuse - which is worth knowing, because the dosing schedule is heavier than people expect. That schedule: shake well, then one 5 mL capful per 40 L (10 US gallons) on day one, followed by one capful per 80 L (20 US gallons) daily for seven days. Seachem's position is that fish can go in at any point provided the full seven days of dosing is completed. Afterwards, one capful per 80 L monthly, or with each water change, whenever new fish arrive, and whenever the tank is being medicated. The instruction most often missed is the first one in Seachem's directions: turn UV and ozone off. Their FAQ asks for the whole seven days off while cycling, and at least 24 hours off for any later top-up dose. Running a UV steriliser through a Stability course sterilises much of what you just paid for. Seachem positions it as a partner to biological media rather than a replacement - their own suggestion is Matrix - and points at AmGuard rather than Stability for an ammonia emergency already in progress. Shelf life is six years from manufacture, so a bottle bought for one tank keeps for the next. Sold in 50 mL through 4 L.
