Description

Seachem Prime is a concentrated conditioner for both fresh and salt water, and the product Seachem calls its flagship. It removes chlorine and chloramine, and - the part that separates it from a plain dechlorinator - Seachem states it contains a binder that detoxifies ammonia, nitrite and nitrate, rendering them non-toxic while still allowing the biofilter to process them. Seachem also states it detoxifies heavy metals found in tap water at typical concentrations, that it is non-acidic and will not impact pH, and that it will not over-activate protein skimmers. The dose is one 5 mL capful per 200 L (50 US gallons) of new water; for small volumes Seachem notes each cap thread is roughly 1 mL. Their directions allow a double dose for exceptionally high chloramine, and up to five times the normal dose to detoxify nitrite in an emergency. Above 30 C (86 F) with chlorine and ammonia low, use a half dose. A sulfur odour on opening is normal, and Seachem prefers the dose added to the new water rather than straight into the tank. Two practical notes. Seachem rates Prime at up to five times the concentration of competing conditioners, so a small bottle covers far more water than its size suggests and dosing by eye wastes it. And the ammonia and nitrite detox claim - which not every conditioner makes - is why Prime is the one usually reached for during a fish-in cycle; Seachem explicitly lists tank cycling as a use case. Sold in 50 mL, 100 mL, 250 mL, 500 mL, 1 L, 2 L and 4 L.
