The giant danio (Devario aequipinnatus) is one of the largest danionin species, reaching up to 15 cm in length. It is native to fast-flowing streams and rivers across the Indian subcontinent and much of Indochina, typically found in clear, shaded waters at elevations up to 300 metres. Its elongated, torpedo-shaped body is patterned with striking horizontal stripes of blue and gold, with clear to grey fins — females are larger and deeper-bodied than males. As an active shoaling species, it should be maintained in groups of at least 6, with 8 to 10 preferred to bring out natural schooling behaviour. A tank measuring at least 1.2 m in length with ample open swimming space and a secure lid is essential, as this species is an enthusiastic jumper. The giant danio is predominantly a surface feeder, taking exogenous insects supplemented by aquatic invertebrates such as worms and crustaceans, and readily accepts most aquarium foods. While generally compatible with robust tankmates, it can be somewhat aggressive and may bully smaller or slower fish, so peaceful community species should be chosen with care. A varied water flow and good oxygenation help replicate its natural hill-stream habitat. The average lifespan in captivity is 5 to 7 years.
