Description
Fluval Stratum is a freshwater plant and shrimp substrate made from mineral-rich soil from the Mount Aso foothills in Japan. Fluval describes a porous structure that lets roots spread and provides surfaces for bacterial colonisation. The manufacturer says Stratum helps support neutral to slightly acidic pH. Treat this as the product’s stated influence, and check the aquarium’s actual water. The current Stratum page does not give a grain-size figure; Bio-Stratum’s one-millimetre specification belongs to that separate product. Fluval recommends gentle rinsing without agitating the granules and warns that adding this natural soil can increase ammonia. Test before stocking. Estimate quantity from the intended area and depth using the product’s guidance, allowing for slopes; a volume calculation alone does not establish the density of every soil.
