Nutrient caps and soil recharge depend on plant load—re-supplement when growth slows and tests indicate depletion.
Bio-Stratum is the same Mount Aso volcanic soil as Fluval Stratum in a finer grain, with one addition: Fluval infuses it with dormant nitrifying bacteria that wake once the substrate meets water. That is the only reason to pay for this bag over plain Stratum, which carries no inoculant - Fluval states it rapidly reduces ammonia levels to help stabilise water conditions in new aquariums, and that the porous granules go on to act as an additional source of biological filtration. Item 12696, sold in 4.4 lb, 8.8 lb and 17.6 lb bags. The second difference is granule size: 1 mm powder against Stratum's 3-5 mm, still lightweight and non-compacting. That is why Fluval positions Bio-Stratum for smaller freshwater aquariums or as a top layer in larger tanks. The fine grade lets even the most delicate roots penetrate and spread rather than skate across the surface, which is what carpeting plants need. The rest follows the series. Fluval says it helps support a neutral to slightly acidic pH, softens water naturally and reduces carbonate hardness - so expect KH to fall rather than hold, the same planning constraint that applies to plain Stratum. It will not stain water and helps control organic discoloration. The soil is cured and heat-treated, which Fluval says extends its life and ensures no parasites are present, and they name shrimp alongside tropical fish as the livestock this pH range suits.
