Can Cherry Shrimp Live With Ember tetra?

An adult cherry shrimp is safe with ember tetras. Embers are very peaceful and only about 2 cm long, smaller than a 3 cm shrimp.

The young are another matter. In nature embers are micropredators that feed on tiny invertebrates and zooplankton, and a newborn cherry shrimp, a millimetre or two long, is that size. Almost all fish eat baby shrimp, and a school of eight or more micropredators working a planted tank can be expected to find a good share of them. Thick moss gives the colony a chance.

Water is the second pull. Embers do best in soft, acidic blackwater conditions with leaf litter and wood, while cherry shrimp need moderate GH and KH to rebuild their shells after each molt. The pH ranges meet only between 6.5 and 7, at 20 to 28 °C. Keep the water near neutral with some mineral content, and accept that neither animal is at its ideal.
