A straightforward pairing. Both are described as very peaceful and as ideal residents of a well researched community tank, both belong with similarly sized characins, small catfish and peaceful cichlids, and neither has a habit that troubles the other.

Water is easy too. The black neon takes 20 to 28 °C and the neon 21 to 25, so hold the tank between 21 and 25 °C, and their pH ranges meet across 5 to 7.5. The black neon is the larger at 3.5 cm against 3 cm, which is not enough difference to matter.

Numbers make the display. Buy 8 to 10 of each in mixed sexes, and the two schools give one another the security that makes both bolder and better coloured. Sand, driftwood roots and dried leaf litter suit them both, and the leaf litter feeds the microbe colonies that fry graze on.
