Can Freshwater butterflyfish Live With Freshwater angelfish?

The butterfly fish's own profile recommends peaceful South American cichlids among its tankmates, and the angelfish is the one most people keep. They also divide the tank cleanly: the butterfly is a surface ambush predator that spends its life at the waterline, and the angelfish holds the middle water.

Both want warm, soft water, and their ranges meet across 25 to 30 °C and pH 6 to 7.5.

Two conditions carry this. The butterfly will eat any fish that fits in its mouth, so the angelfish has to be past that size when it goes in rather than a small juvenile. And the butterfly's trailing finnage is a standing temptation to nippers, so an angelfish that starts working on it is the signal to separate them. Keep the surface calm and covered with floating plants, feed the butterfly at the top with live or frozen insect foods, and use a tight lid, since the fish glides out of open tanks.
