Dwarf Vallisneria

For small tanks where standard Vallisneria outgrows the available space, Vallisneria nana offers the same grassy look at half the height. Native to northern Australian creeks and billabongs, it stays under 30 cm in most aquariums, with narrow bright green leaves that are slightly twisted. It spreads by runners once settled, sending up new plantlets a few centimetres from the parent.

Moderate light keeps it growing steadily; low light produces taller, thinner leaves that lean toward the light source. Like all vallisnerias, it is sensitive to iron-based liquid fertilisers that can cause leaf melt if dosed near the crown — root tabs pushed into the substrate near the runners are a safer way to feed it. No CO₂ is needed, making it one of the easiest background plants for a low-tech tank.

It tolerates a wide pH range but grows best in neutral to slightly alkaline water with some carbonate hardness. Keep the runners trimmed in small tanks or the plant will take over the entire substrate within a few months.
