Mini Macrandra

Mini macrandra is a compact selection of Rotala macrandra that stays shorter and grows more slowly than the parent species, making it one of the few red stem plants suitable for the midground rather than the background. Leaves are smaller and rounder than standard R. macrandra, with the same deep red colour under high light. There is no dedicated Flowgrow page for this cultivar, so the values below are based on the parent species with adjustments for its slower habit. Optimum temperature is 24 to 28 °C, pH 4.5 to 7, with high light and CO2 injection necessary to maintain compact growth and red pigmentation. Without CO2 the stems elongate, the internodes spread, and the plant loses the dense look that makes it desirable. Growth is slow relative to other rotalas — trimming every two weeks rather than twice a week — which is a practical advantage in low-maintenance layouts. Propagation follows the same cut-and-replant method as other rotalas. The difficulty is expert, because keeping the mini form truly compact requires dialled-in light, CO2, and nutrient levels; any fluctuation causes it to stretch toward the surface and revert to the larger growth pattern of the base species.
