Skelet King

Named for the skeletal vein pattern that stands out against its dark, near-black leaf surface, Bucephalandra 'Skelet King' is a slow-growing epiphyte from Borneo. Like all bucephalandras, it grows on rocks and wood in fast-flowing streams and must never be planted in the substrate — its rhizome rots if buried.

Low to moderate light is enough; strong light encourages more compact growth and darkens the leaf colour, but also risks algae colonising the slow-growing leaves before the plant can outgrow them. CO₂ injection speeds growth but is not required — this is among the least demanding bucephalandra cultivars and does well in low-tech tanks with stable water parameters.

Establishment is slow: attach the plant to hardscape with superglue or fishing line and leave it undisturbed for several weeks until the roots anchor naturally. New leaves emerge from the rhizome tip while the older leaves may show minor spotting as the plant adapts to submerged conditions. In established specimens, small white spathe flowers occasionally appear above the water surface.
