Echinosperma Blyxa

The grass-like leaves radiate from a central rosette and, given enough iron, develop a reddish-brown tint that distinguishes this Blyxa from the greener B. aubertii. Blyxa echinosperma comes from shallow waters across Asia, from India to Japan, and grows in both still and slow-moving streams.

The leaves are narrow, pointed, and slightly rippled along the edges. A well-grown plant reaches 20 to 30 cm and stays as a solitary rosette unless it throws side shoots. It works best as a midground specimen or in a small group, not as a dense background hedge.

Soft, slightly acidic water is preferred: pH 5 to 7.5 and temperatures from 22 to 28 °C are the steady conditions it needs. CO₂ injection speeds growth and improves colour but is not required. A fine-grained substrate like sand helps the delicate roots spread.

It is often annual in nature, and the aquarium form can be short-lived as well. Producing seeds is the most reliable way to keep a line going: small white flowers appear at the surface and self-pollinate. The seeds can be collected from the transparent pods once they turn brown and sown in fine sand under direct light.
