Aquarium tank

Description

A glass aquarium is five panes held together by a silicone seam, and the seam is the interesting part. A 2026 paper that turned ordinary tanks into measurement chambers says so directly: their electrodes could be easily inserted at any point through the silicone sealant between the glass walls, which facilitates the conversion of virtually any common glass aquarium into an experimental chamber. Silicone is what holds the box together, and it is the part a probe goes through. Size is chosen by the job rather than by a rule. Published setups simply state their dimensions and move on: a 2025 study of camouflage used a small glass aquarium with internal dimensions of 400 by 200 mm, 200 mm deep. Merck's guidance for a home aquarium works the same way when it describes the cheapest useful tank in the hobby, a quarantine tank: for a modest investment, a hobbyist can set up a quarantine tank using an inexpensive 10-gal. tank, sponge filter, small aeration pump, and heater. Shape is not decoration either. FAO's guide to recirculation aquaculture states the general case: choosing the right tank design, such as size and shape, water depth, self-cleaning ability, can have a considerable impact on the performance of the species reared. The guide then gives the clearest example of what shape does. In a circular tank, or in a square tank with cut corners, the water moves in a circular pattern making the whole water column of the tank move around the centre; in a raceway the hydraulics have no positive effect on the removal of the particles. FAO is describing farm tanks, and says nothing about a rectangular display tank, but it does say plainly that a tank's shape either helps move solids or does not. No source here publishes a glass thickness, a brace requirement or a stand specification, so this page publishes none of those.
