Detailed assessment

Two fish of the same genus with the same manners, so the only question is the thermometer. Both are generally peaceful and both are described as ideal residents of a well researched community, best kept alongside similarly sized characins. Neither bothers the other.

The cardinal comes from warmer water at 23 to 29 °C, the neon from 21 to 25, so the band they share is 23 to 25 °C. Pick a figure inside it and hold it. pH is no obstacle, since the cardinal takes 3.5 to 7.5 and the neon 4 to 7.5, and both show their colour best in soft, acidic water.

Buy both in numbers: 8 to 10 neons and 10 or more cardinals, mixed sexes. The two schools often loosen into one moving group, which is the point of keeping them together. A base of 60 by 30 cm, about 54 litres, holds a school of either species, so two schools want more than that, with a dark substrate, floating cover and subdued light.
