Can Amano Shrimp Live With Guppy?

An adult Amano shrimp is 4 to 5 cm long, about the size of a guppy, and only fish big enough to eat them are a threat. Guppies are very peaceful and nowhere near that size, so the adults are safe. Amanos can be kept with many similar-sized, peaceful community fish, Endler's livebearers among them.

There is no question of the guppies eating the young, either. Amano larvae need brackish or salt water to develop, so a freshwater tank almost never raises any, and a female carrying eggs is no sign of shrimp to come.

The water overlaps at 18 to 28 °C and pH 7 to 7.5, the lower end of the guppy's range. Amanos have big appetites and will steal fish food from their tankmates; guppies feed near the surface, so in practice the shrimp mostly get what sinks past them. Like all shrimp they are extremely sensitive to copper, so check any fish medication before you dose.
