Goias Rotala

The plant sold as Rotala sp. 'Goiás' was identified by Flowgrow as a member of the very variable, widely distributed species Rotala mexicana, so the profile uses the formal name Rotala mexicana 'Goiás' while keeping the trade form as a synonym. It comes from the Brazilian state of Goiás.

Submersed it grows as a creeping stem plant, forming dense populations that also push up upright shoots, and it suits a foreground or nano-tank placement at about 10 cm, the upper figure of the 2 to 10 cm range the source publishes. The culture data list strong light, an optimum temperature of 22 to 28 °C, a pH range of 4.5 to 7, and carbon dioxide levels of 25 to 40 mg/l. Growth is fast, and the plant propagates by runners and by cuttings. Commercial availability is limited, and hobbyists more often trade it among themselves. Under good light and steady CO₂ it forms a low, carpet-like colony rather than a tall stem.
