Enie Rotala

Dennerle named this Rotala after the television presenter Enie van de Meiklokjes, who performed the naming at Interzoo in 2010; catalogues sometimes carry the spelling 'Enis'. Fine leaves sit in whorls along a dark red to magenta stem, and Flowgrow gives the plant's height as 20 to 40 cm. Its range has never been pinned down, probably somewhere in Southeast Asia.

Flowgrow gives 22 to 28 °C and pH 4.5 to 7 for it, with strong light and CO₂; the leaves shift from green through red to partly pink, and the red is deepest where light is strongest. It grows fast, and cuttings are the way to increase it.

Two identification notes are worth carrying. It is easily mistaken for Rotala sp. 'Vietnam', which branches more freely and shows more golden tones, where 'Enie' keeps shorter leaves and runs redder. Flowgrow also records that the Rotala brought in as Pogostemon 'Superfine Leaf', or P. stellatus 'Superfine', cannot be told apart from 'Enie'.
