Dwarf Rotala

Rotala rotundifolia is an adaptable stem plant for middle and background groups. Its narrow underwater leaves differ from the rounder leaves of the creeping above-water form. Trade forms vary in colour and habit, and the plant has historically been confused with the distinct Rotala indica, so confirm the identity when a particular form is important to the layout.

Medium light can support growth, while stronger light can produce denser shoots and more pronounced reddish colour. Added CO₂ can assist growth; it does not replace an adequate nutrient supply or light reaching the lower stems. Keep water at 22 to 28 °C and pH 4.5 to 8. Its broader outdoor tolerance should not be treated as a guarantee of equally fast growth in every coldwater aquarium.

Plant stems in groups with enough spacing for light and circulation. Cut back tall or crowded shoots and replant healthy tips or side shoots; the remaining stems can branch below the cut. Replace old shaded bases when they no longer contribute healthy growth. Trimming frequency depends on the conditions and the shape being maintained. Judge the group by new leaves and branching rather than assuming its growth rate is fast regardless of light or nutrition.
