Downoi

Downoi — Thai for 'little star' — earns the name with a tight rosette of crinkled, curly leaves that looks nothing like the stem plant it botanically is.

Pogostemon helferi stays low, rarely exceeding 10 cm in height, which makes it one of the options for a textured foreground without regular trimming. It grows along the substrate by sending out side shoots that root at the nodes, gradually forming a carpet. Under strong light the plant stays very compact; in lower light it stretches upward and loses the dense rosette shape.

Temperature of 20 to 25 °C and pH between 5 and 7.5 are suitable. While CO₂ injection is not strictly required, the plant noticeably improves in leaf density and growth rate when supplied at 20 to 40 mg/l. It can also grow attached to hardscape, where it forms small clumps rather than a continuous carpet.

Propagation is by cuttings or by separating daughter plants that form at the nodes. It grows emersed easily on moist substrate, producing small white flowers above the waterline. In an aquarium, iron dosing keeps the leaf colour deep green rather than pale.
