Monte Carlo

Monte Carlo is a creeping, round-leaved foreground plant used for a low green carpet. It can also hang over planted hardscape, making it useful where an overhanging cushion is wanted. Its South American range includes Argentina, southern Brazil and Uruguay. The plant is generally more forgiving than HC Cuba, but a dense carpet still depends on conditions at the substrate rather than the advertised power of a lamp.

Use medium to strong light that reaches the entire planted patch. Good light and added CO₂ support compact growth; modest setups may grow it more slowly and less densely. Maintain a balanced nutrient supply as the carpet develops.

Separate the starting mat into small portions and plant them with gaps for creeping shoots to fill. Allow the roots to establish before repeated trimming or repositioning. Cut back the mat when it becomes too thick or shades its own base, and remove the loose pieces. Propagate with rooted portions or healthy cuttings. Carpet density and the time needed to cover an area vary with planting quantity, light, nutrition and establishment.
