Asian Marshweed

Often mistaken for Cabomba at a glance, Limnophila sessiliflora is by far the more forgiving plant — whorls of finely divided bright green leaves on stems that grow fast in average aquarium conditions.

Limnophila sessiliflora is one of the easiest background stems for a beginner: it tolerates a wide pH range from 5 to 8, temperature between 20 and 26 °C, and grows well under moderate light without CO₂. It can grow quickly once established; trim when shoots reach the surface or begin to shade the lower growth.

When the stem reaches the surface the top growth becomes more compact and may produce small purple flowers above the waterline. This is a sign to trim. Each cutting replanted in the substrate grows into a new plant, so healthy stem cuttings can gradually build a background group.

It grows emersed without difficulty and can be cultivated in paludariums or moist soil. Fast growth uses nutrients from the water, so maintain adequate nutrition as the group develops rather than assuming supply is never limiting. Lower light produces longer internodes and a raggedy appearance, while poor light or other unsuitable conditions can still limit establishment.
