Trim schedule (hint)

Trim or thin as the plant fills its space. Let new planting establish, and watch for shaded lower growth.

Description

Java moss can cover wood, stone or a filter surface with loose green growth, and provides shelter and grazing surfaces in shrimp and fry tanks. Java moss is commonly traded as Taxiphyllum barbieri. Confirm the plant's identity when a particular moss form matters to the layout.

Spread a small portion over the chosen surface and secure it with fine thread or an appropriate plant adhesive. Its rhizoids gradually grip the surface, so it does not need to be buried in substrate. Low light can support growth; stronger light generally produces a fuller, more compact appearance when nutrition is adequate. Fertilisation and added CO₂ can improve growth but are not essential to keeping this moss. Water around 24°C supports good growth.

Trim the shoots when they obscure the hardscape or make the patch too thick. Cut portions can be attached elsewhere to start new patches. Leave space for circulation through the growth and remove trapped debris during maintenance. Loose fragments may settle elsewhere in the tank, so collect unwanted trimmings rather than assuming the moss will stay only where it was first attached.
