Dwarf Hygrophila

If there is one plant that grows under almost any condition a beginner can provide, it is Hygrophila polysperma. Light intensity barely matters — it grows at low light, medium light, and high light, only the leaf size and stem spacing change. Water hardness has no effect on its growth rate. No CO₂ is needed. It simply grows.

The plant produces many side shoots that can be cut and re-planted, which makes propagation as easy as trimming the stems every two to three weeks. If left untrimmed in a moderate-size tank, a few stems can fill the entire background within a couple of months. The leaves are bright green and narrow, and the plant responds to higher light with more compact, bushier growth.

Originally from India and Bhutan, this species has naturalised in warm regions around the world and is considered invasive in parts of the southern United States. It is widely available commercially and one of the most common plants in the aquarium trade. For anyone setting up their first planted tank, it is a reliable choice that does not require specialised equipment or fertiliser dosing.
