Stricta Hygrophila

Stricta Hygrophila is a broad-leaved stem plant for the background, or the midground of a deep aquarium. The name is used within Hygrophila corymbosa, a variable Southeast Asian species. Give each group room to develop rather than planting stems so tightly that their lower leaves remain shaded. It can also grow above the waterline in an open aquarium.

It is very easy to cultivate and fast-growing, with medium to strong light, an optimum of 24 to 28 °C and pH 5.5 to 7.5. It is a practical choice for a modest planted setup, while added CO₂ can assist growth when light and nutrients support it.

Plant individual stems into the substrate, keeping the leafy tips exposed. Maintain a balanced macro- and micronutrient supply as the group grows. Cut back shoots that reach the surface or crowd neighbouring plants, and replant healthy tops. The remaining stems can branch below the cut, allowing the group to become bushier. Trim according to the actual growth and light reaching the lower leaves rather than a fixed calendar.
