Zippelianus Moss

This Fissidens species is listed for sale under several names, and the one you receive may be labelled Fissidens crispulus — the name Flowgrow treats as the accepted scientific name, with Fissidens zippelianus as its synonym. The plant itself is the same either way: a small, slow-growing moss with closely spaced leaves that form a flat, feathery mat when attached to wood or stone.

The individual leaves are arranged in two rows along the stem, giving each frond a slightly flattened, tape-like appearance. Under moderate light and stable conditions the moss stays compact at about 4 to 5 cm tall, making it useful for the foreground or midground of a nano tank. It attaches readily to hardscape with thread or superglue.

The optimum temperature range is 22 to 28 °C with pH between 5 and 7.5. CO₂ injection helps growth density but is not required — the moss grows at a moderate pace even without it. Moderate light is enough to keep the lower fronds from browning, while very low light causes the moss to thin out and lose its compact shape.

Propagation is by division: a clump can be torn into pieces and each piece tied to a new surface recovers within a few weeks. It also grows emersed in moist, shaded conditions. The main maintenance task is trimming back older, browning fronds rather than cutting the whole mat — spot-trimming keeps the moss looking clean without resetting its growth.
