Description
The dwarf hairgrass sold as Eleocharis sp. 'Mini' is used for a low foreground carpet. Its species status remains unsettled. The culms are as fine as those of E. acicularis but stay between 3 and 7 cm, often bending sideways, which is why it is the hairgrass chosen for carpets that should not need constant trimming.
Its job in a layout is the lawn. It fills in through runners that run mostly below the surface of the substrate, and clumps can be split to speed that up. A nutrient substrate is the usual base for it. Related choices for the same job are Eleocharis pusilla and Eleocharis sp. 'Minima'.
It is rated easy and grows at a moderate pace, taking 18 to 27 °C, pH 5 to 7, carbonate hardness 0 to 14 dKH and medium to high light. It is frequently available in shops.
