Dwarf Anubias

Dwarf Anubias is useful where a slow-growing plant attached to wood or stone is wanted. The thick green leaves and creeping rhizome make a compact hardscape accent, and the plant can be kept without injected CO₂. It is tolerant of a range of conditions, but its slow growth should not be mistaken for freedom from maintenance.

The key planting rule is to keep the rhizome uncovered. Secure it gently to rock or wood with thread, fishing line or a small amount of aquarium-safe plant glue. The roots may enter the substrate, but burying the rhizome risks rot. Low light is sufficient; in a brighter layout, a shaded position can reduce algae collecting on the long-lived leaves. The published temperature optimum is 22 to 26 °C, with pH 5 to 8.

Observe new leaf growth and the condition of the rhizome after planting. Remove badly damaged leaves without cutting into the rhizome, and maintain a balanced nutrient supply. Propagate by dividing a healthy rhizome into sections that retain leaves and growing points. Leave those sections attached while they establish rather than repeatedly moving or replanting them.
