Coffeefolia Anubias

Coffeefolia Anubias takes its common name from the strongly arched tissue between the lateral leaf veins, which gives the oval leaves the quilted look of a coffee bush. Long traded simply as Anubias barteri 'Coffeefolia', the plant was formally described by Christel Kasselmann in 2010 as the variety coffeifolia of Anubias barteri. New leaves sprout orange-brown and later turn dark green, and the young leaf stalks are brownish red, an easy way to pick the form out in a collection. Growth submersed is very slow, as with all Anubias, the creeping rhizome binding to rock and driftwood once tied in place, and the emersed form is quite decorative in the shaded corners of a paludarium. Propagation is straightforward: the creeping rhizome can be divided, or daughter plants cut off and replanted, and it is not hardy outdoors in Germany. It appreciates moderate fertilisation, and it does best in temperatures of 22 to 26 °C with a pH of 5 to 8, tolerating soft to moderately hard water.

Keep the rhizome uncovered when securing it to hardscape. Its slow growth means older leaves remain exposed for a long time; inspect them for algae and remove damaged leaves as needed.
