Sponge filter

Description

An air-driven sponge filter draws aquarium water through foam as bubbles rise inside its lift tube. The foam traps suspended debris and provides a surface for beneficial bacteria. It is commonly used in shrimp and fry aquariums and can provide additional filtration in an established tank. The filter sits in the aquarium and connects to an external air pump through airline tubing. Check the required pump, tubing and backflow protection when buying. Air supply drives the water movement, so choose a compatible pump and adjust the airflow for the selected filter and aquarium. Single-sponge and twin-sponge designs offer different layouts. A compact unit suits limited space; a twin unit needs room for both sponges and access for cleaning. Some models include separate media chambers or an adjustable outlet. Check the footprint, installed height and maintenance access rather than assuming that two sponges imply twice the flow. Foam porosity affects debris collection and clogging. Remove accumulated waste when flow declines, rinse the sponge in removed aquarium water, and clean the lift tube and air outlet as needed. Where multiple mature sponges provide biological filtration, stagger their maintenance.
