Description

An aquarium siphon hose transfers water out of the tank during a partial water change. With the hose filled and its outlet below the source water level, gravity keeps water moving through it. Keep the intake submerged and secure both ends so air does not enter and interrupt the siphon. A plain hose can be started by filling it under water, holding the water in the tube while positioning the ends, and releasing the outlet into a lower receiving container. This avoids mouth suction. Ready-made assemblies may add a shake-start valve, a priming device, hose clips or a stopcock. A tap-driven water-changing system uses water pressure to create suction and has its own connection and operating requirements. Choose a length that reaches the receiving bucket or drain and a diameter that fits any attached cleaner, valve or connector. Under comparable conditions, a wider bore moves more water, while narrower tubing gives a slower transfer. Select a flow you can control for the amount being removed, and use a suitable flow-control valve where the assembly provides one. Diameter alone does not specify a fixed flow rate. A hose fitted with a gravel-cleaner chamber can also carry debris away from the substrate during a water change; the chamber and any intake screen are additional parts of that assembly. Use a separate siphon hose for a quarantine tank, and disinfect and store it dry after quarantine according to the equipment procedure.
