Description

A sand flattener is a handled spatula for levelling and arranging aquarium substrate. It is useful during layout setup and for restoring a disturbed surface after a water change. Double-ended designs provide differently sized working heads on the same handle. Choose the head for the area being shaped. A wider end suits an open patch, while a smaller end is easier to place in a narrow gap between layout materials. Compare the actual head shape and width with that space, then check that the handle provides the reach you need. Total length and head width describe different parts of the tool; a long handle does not establish how much room the head needs. Flatteners are available individually and in aquascaping kits with scissors and tweezers. Check the dimensions of the spatula itself rather than treating a kit’s overall size or another tool’s length as its specification. Stainless-steel versions need rinsing and drying after use: residues can still cause corrosion, including after freshwater work.
