Description

An intake pre-filter sponge slips over a filter inlet to catch larger debris and reduce the chance of small animals entering. It also provides surface area for beneficial bacteria. Select the sponge for the actual intake and filter flow. Compare the intake-hole diameter, outer dimensions and available clearance together. The AQUANEAT six-pack and HuYaYa four-pack have different cylinder dimensions and single-ended intake holes. A blind hole is different from a through-hole; check the selected product’s fit range rather than assuming every foam cylinder fits the same inlet. Clean the sponge as debris builds up. Enclose it in a container while removing it to catch released debris, then squeeze it in aquarium water and reinstall it. Protection also depends on suction and animal size: tiny fry, shrimp or snails may still pass through the foam. Gentler filter flow is appropriate when keeping very small animals.
