Description

Some aquarium husbandry uses pool-filter sand as a substrate for foraging fish. A published Corydoras protocol describes this use in a controlled sand-bed arrangement. That example does not establish that every pool-filter product is suitable or prescribe one bed depth for every aquarium. Check the actual material and product information. HTH’s selected fifty-pound product calls its sand Medium; Classic Sand & Play’s selected twenty-pound product identifies silica and #20 grade. These are specifications of two pool-filter products, rather than aquarium grain-size standards or guarantees of animal compatibility. The Classic listing describes prewashing and kiln drying, while both products are marketed for pool filtration. Assess the selected material, cleanliness and intended aquarium use separately from its pool-filter instructions. A manufacturer’s filter-filling or replacement schedule should not become an aquarium substrate-maintenance rule.
