Description
Lily pipes connect an external aquarium filter's hoses to the water in the tank. The inflow draws water into the filter, while the outflow returns it and shapes the current. Glass versions include a slotted intake and a flared, lily-shaped return. An intake with a surface skimmer adds a route for collecting surface film, as in the JARDLI inflow example below. Choose the outlet shape for the intended current. A flared lily outlet directs the return into the aquarium; a loop-style outlet, such as ADA Lily Pipe Spin, slows the exiting stream as water travels around the loop. A skimmer intake serves a different purpose from either outlet. Select the intake and return separately if the aquarium needs both surface collection and a particular return-flow pattern. Match the actual hose connection and check installation space. The two JARDLI examples have a 17 mm pipe outside diameter and are specified for 16/22 mm hose, described in the listing as 5/8 inch inside diameter. These are different measurements of the pipe and hose, not alternative names for one diameter. Also check pipe height, clearance over the rim and the mounting method. Some models use suction cups; ADA's Mini versions hang on glass no thicker than 5 mm. Those limits are specific to the Mini range. Leave access for cleaning and hose removal. Support glass near the connection when fitting or removing a hose, avoiding force applied through a long section of pipe. Remove leaves caught on intake slots and clean accumulated algae according to the product instructions. A glass intake or skimmer still requires maintenance; its shape does not establish that it cannot clog, draw air or break.
