Hang-on-back filter

Description

A hang-on-back filter mounts on the aquarium rim. Water travels through an intake into a filter housing, passes through its media and returns to the tank over the outlet. This puts the media compartment at the tank edge without the external hose run of a canister. Check the tank rim and cover clearance, the housing’s fit and the intake reach before choosing a model. Keep the intake and aquarium water level within its operating limits. Fluval AquaClear instructions specify different minimum water levels by model; a single evaporation limit does not apply to every hang-on-back filter. Media arrangements differ. Some units use cartridges, while others have baskets for foam, biological media and chemical media. Use the specified arrangement and filling limits. A flow control, where provided, lets you adjust the output within the model’s range. Follow the startup instructions: the AquaClear example requires a water-filled case before power is connected. Clean deposits from the intake, housing and impeller, and restart using the priming procedure. Service each medium as directed rather than assuming every cartridge or basket has the same replacement schedule.
