Fin rot medication

Description

A frayed or damaged fin needs assessment before choosing a treatment. Seachem notes that fin rot can be mistaken for damage from fin-nipping fish. The visible condition alone does not identify the cause or prove that an antibacterial medication is appropriate. Check water quality, stress and handling conditions as well as the affected fish. The veterinary reference recommends identifying bacterial infections and using susceptibility testing where possible before antimicrobial treatment. Correcting the conditions that predispose fish to disease remains part of care. KanaPlex is a kanamycin-based example marketed for several bacterial and fungal fish conditions, including fin and tail rot. Its water-dosing directions exclude invertebrates and require removal of chemical filtration and suspension of UV/ozone. Check the actual label and route; those restrictions and any course belong to this product, not every fin-rot remedy.
