Filter sponge

Description

Aquarium filter foam traps suspended dirt and can provide a surface for bacteria involved in biological filtration. It is sold as cut-to-fit sheets or blocks and as shaped replacement pads for particular filters. The foam is a filter medium: it needs a filter housing or other arrangement that moves water through it. Choose the pore structure for the job. Coarse foam is used for mechanical prefiltration of larger debris, while finer foam catches smaller particles. Medium and fine foam can also support biological filtration. Fine polishing fleece is another material and should not be confused with a reusable foam pad. Match the pad’s thickness and outline to the filter compartment. Cut-to-fit foam offers flexibility; shaped replacements suit a specified basket or cartridge. Follow the filter’s media order and fit instructions so water passes through the medium. Product-specific pore counts and dimensions describe the selected pad, not all filter sponge. Clean when trapped waste reduces water movement, using the selected filter’s maintenance instructions. Aquarium water can be used to wash debris from foam that is maintaining a bacterial colony. Stagger cleaning or replacement of established biological pads; service intervals depend on the product and its use.
