Description

A CO2 check valve is a one-way component that helps prevent aquarium water travelling back through the gas line toward the regulator and other CO2 equipment. Install it in the gas-flow direction specified for the valve; on JBL's SAFESTOP the arrow points toward the aquarium. Available designs include a separate valve inserted into the hose and a valve built into a bubble counter. Standalone products can have metal bodies and either hose barbs or locking connections. Select by the actual CO2 system and hose connection, not by appearance alone. For example, JBL SAFESTOP is specified for 4/6 mm CO2 hose and uses locking nuts. That fitting size does not establish the compatibility of other valves. Opening pressure matters. JBL's spring-loaded CO2 valve cannot be opened by ordinary aquarium diaphragm-pump pressure, and an air-pump check valve is not automatically a substitute for a CO2 valve. Check whether the bubble counter or diffuser already contains backflow protection before adding another valve. JBL warns that multiple spring-loaded valves in its CO2 line can prevent the supply from restarting after a shut-off; follow the connection arrangement specified for the system.
