Ceramic rings

Description

Ceramic filter rings are hollow pieces used in aquarium filter compartments. Their role depends on the product: some are intended for coarse mechanical prefiltration, while porous types can also provide surfaces for beneficial bacteria. Choose for the filtration stage you need, rather than assuming every ceramic ring has the same biological capacity. For example, EHEIM MECH is a mechanical prefilter made from hollow ceramic rings, while JBL Cermec is described for mechanical prefiltration or biological use. The ring shape alone does not establish pore connectivity, surface area or a treatment capacity. Match the pieces to the filter basket and its media arrangement. A mechanical prefilter receives larger dirt particles before subsequent stages; biological media need water moving through their compartment. Follow the filter’s instructions for placement and containment, and leave access for cleaning. Remove accumulated dirt when it restricts flow. For established biological rings, rinsing in removed aquarium water is a way to clear debris; stagger maintenance rather than replacing every mature medium together. Follow the selected media’s replacement guidance. A ring’s material, dimensions and maintenance interval belong to its product.
