Catappa leaves

Description

Catappa leaves are dried leaves of Terminalia catappa, also called Indian almond leaves. As they soak and break down, they release tannins that tint aquarium water yellow-brown. They are used as botanical leaf litter in blackwater-style aquariums. Decomposing leaves provide a surface for biofilm and microorganisms that shrimp and small fry can graze on. Leaf litter can also provide hiding places. The released compounds are weakly acidic, so consider the aquarium’s water chemistry and the requirements of its inhabitants when adding leaves. Prepare the leaves according to the supplier’s directions. Aquarium Co-Op’s cleaned leaves can be added directly; dusty leaves can be gently rinsed first. Leaves may initially float and later break down. Monitor the water and replace or remove the remains as appropriate; the leaves are not a substitute for diagnosing and treating fish disease.
