Canister filter

Description

A canister filter holds filter media in an external housing, with intake and return hoses connecting it to the aquarium. Separate compartments can hold media for trapping debris, supporting biological filtration and selected chemical-filtration tasks. Follow the chosen filter’s media order. Choose for the aquarium and the space available for the housing, hose route and servicing. Check the manufacturer’s installation-height limits, connection sizes and flow guidance. Fluval’s 07 Series, for example, requires placement below the aquarium and a hose route without loops; those installation limits belong to that series. Priming removes air and fills the system before operation. Use the model’s startup procedure, check hose joints and the lid seal, and do not run a filter that requires a water-filled housing dry. Flow adjustment must stay within the manufacturer’s permitted range. Allow room to disconnect and carry the canister for cleaning. Inspect hoses, seals, the intake and the impeller, as well as the media. Follow the media’s cleaning and replacement directions; avoid replacing all established biological media together. Maintenance affects performance, so assess the installed filter rather than treating a catalog flow figure as a guarantee.
